Sonata for Viola and Piano was composed for violist John Cox and his wife, pianist Patricia Cox, who premiered the work in 1982 at Christ Church Cathedral in Hartford, Connecticut.

The first movement, "Allegro", is an energetic and rhythmic. The second movement, "Chaconne", is a dramatic soliloquy for the viola alone. It leads directly into the last movement, "Gigue", which is a spirited dialogue between the piano and viola.
