A review: Second was Walker's return with a delightful new work celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States. "America 250!" is a three-part tone poem based on popular American songs: "Yankee Doodle" opens with a brilliant fife-and-drum effect, then entwined in some rich counterpoint; "Bound for the Promised Land" delivers the drama behind the spiritual; and "15 Miles (on the Erie Canal)" revels in the optimistic pioneering spirit with plenty of brass and percussion. Pure Americana. In fact, it's Walker's canny sense of orchestration that gives these old tunes a fresh sense of immediacy.
